How a softener actually works
Water passes through a bed of resin beads carrying sodium ions. The calcium and magnesium that make water hard swap places with the sodium, and the water leaving the unit is genuinely soft rather than modified.
Periodically the resin becomes saturated and regenerates, flushing with a strong salt solution to recharge it and sending the waste to drain. That is why a softener needs a drain connection and a salt supply, and it is the whole mechanism. There is nothing mysterious about it.
Two types you will see:
Metered units
regenerate based on how much water you have actually used. More efficient with salt and water, and the sensible default for most households.
Timer units
regenerate on a schedule regardless of usage. Cheaper, less efficient, and prone to regenerating when nobody has used any water.
What it will and will not do
Being straight about this saves disappointment.
It will:
- Stop new scale forming anywhere downstream of the unit
- Extend the life of shower valves, taps, kettles, washing machines and dishwashers
- Noticeably reduce cleaning effort on screens, tiles and taps
- Reduce detergent, shampoo and soap consumption, sometimes substantially
- Protect a boiler’s domestic hot water side and a cylinder’s coil
It will not:
- Remove scale that has already formed. Existing scale in a boiler heat exchanger needs cleaning or replacing separately
- Make your water safe or unsafe. It is a hardness issue, not a quality issue
- Change your water pressure, though a badly sized unit can restrict flow, which is a sizing problem rather than an inherent one
- Do anything about your heating circuit, which recirculates the same water and is largely protected already
Siting, sizing and the practical details
Where it goes
It needs to be on the incoming mains, after the stopcock and before everything else, with the drinking water tap taken off before the unit. Common locations are under the kitchen sink, in a utility, or in a garage.
Constraints to check: physical space including room to lift salt in, a drain connection, usually a power supply, and reasonable access for adding salt without moving three cupboards’ worth of contents every time.
The drinking water tap
Standard practice is to leave one tap unsoftened, normally the kitchen cold, for drinking and cooking. Softened water has a slightly raised sodium content, which matters for anyone on a low sodium diet and for making up infant formula.
This gets designed in at installation. Retrofitting it afterwards is more disruptive than doing it at the time, so decide before rather than after.
Sizing
Sized on household occupancy and water usage, against the hardness of the incoming supply. Undersize it and it regenerates constantly, using more salt and more water. Oversize it and you have paid for capacity you do not use and the resin sits idle longer than is ideal.
Salt
Block salt and tablet salt both work. Block is tidier to handle and suits smaller units. Tablet is usually more economical per kilo and suits higher usage. Consumption depends on hardness and household size, and in Milton Keynes, with hardness where it is, usage runs higher than the manufacturer’s typical figures which are usually based on average national hardness.
Worth factoring in the ongoing salt when deciding, alongside the installation.
Why the case is stronger here than most places
At 300 mg/l and above, three things follow that would not in a soft water area.
Shower valve cartridges.
The single most common hard water failure we attend in Milton Keynes. Thermostatic cartridges have fine passages and moving parts, both of which scale, and they seize. Replacing cartridges every few years across two bathrooms adds up.
Combi heat exchangers.
Scale on the plate heat exchanger produces hot water that runs hot, then cools, then returns, while the heating stays perfectly fine. It confuses people every time because the radiators are working.
Everything cosmetic.
Screens, tiles, taps and chrome mark faster than most people are willing to keep up with. This is the reason a lot of our customers actually buy a softener, and it is a perfectly good reason.
If you are about to spend meaningfully on a new bathroom, this is the moment to price a softener alongside it. It is the difference between fittings that look new in five years and fittings that do not.
What about the alternatives?
In-line scale reducers
Small units on the cold feed to a boiler, dosing food-grade polyphosphate. They do not remove hardness. They interfere with scale sticking to hot surfaces, which protects the appliance downstream. Inexpensive, standard practice on boiler installations here, and required by several manufacturers for warranty purposes in hard water areas.
If your concern is only the boiler, a scale reducer is often enough. If your concern is the whole house, it is not.
Note that cartridge types need replacing periodically. One that has not been touched in five years has stopped working.
Magnetic and electronic conditioners
These claim to alter scale behaviour with magnetic fields or electrical pulses without changing water chemistry. Independent evidence is weak and inconsistent, and reported results vary widely.
We are not going to say they never do anything. We are going to say that ion exchange and polyphosphate dosing have a clear mechanism behind them, and that if you are spending money on this problem, those are the two approaches we would put it into. Read the marketing with that in mind.
Servicing
Softeners are low maintenance, not no maintenance.
- Keep salt topped up. Running dry means unsoftened water passing through with nobody noticing
- Check the brine tank periodically for salt bridging, where a crust forms and the salt below stops dissolving
- Have the unit serviced periodically: valve operation, regeneration cycle, resin condition, and hardness tested at the tap to confirm it is actually working
- Resin has a finite life, typically many years, and eventually needs replacing rather than the whole unit
Testing the water at the tap is the only way to know it is doing its job. A softener that stopped regenerating properly two years ago looks exactly like one that is working.
Before you buy
- Test your actual hardness rather than relying on a postcode average
- Decide where it will go, including room to lift salt in
- Confirm there is a drain connection and power if needed
- Plan the unsoftened drinking tap at installation, not afterwards
- Size on your household, not on a generic figure
- Check the flow rate through the unit will not restrict your shower
- Decide block or tablet salt and price the ongoing supply
- If anyone in the household is on a low sodium diet, discuss it first
- Ask about the resin’s expected life and what servicing involves

Will a softener fix my boiler?
It will stop the problem recurring. It will not clean scale that has already formed on a heat exchanger, which is a separate repair.
Can I drink softened water?
Standard practice is to keep the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for drinking and cooking, which we plumb in at installation.
Will it change my water pressure?
A correctly sized unit should not noticeably affect it. An undersized one can restrict flow, which is why sizing matters.
How much salt will it use?

Do I still need a scale reducer on the boiler if I have a softener?
